EVENT RECAP: National Strategies for Enhancing Climate Ambition, Side Event at UN Sustainable Transport Conference

The “National strategies for enhancing climate ambition – systemic transformations and their enablers” Side Event Of the United Nations Second Global Sustainable Transport Conference was held on October 15th, 2021 and Official of Viet Nam’s MPI made remarks about the country’s strategies for enhancing climate ambition in the transport sector.

The side event aimed to address a nuanced and complementary perspective on climate ambition, based around systemic transformations and their enablers, taking stock of progress within countries and sectors since the Paris agreement. During this side event, Ms Tran Minh Hue, Official of the Ministry of Planning and Investment Viet Nam (MPI), elaborated on Viet Nam’s strategies for enhancing climate ambition in the transport sector. Ms Hue indicated that MPI would promote more active solutions in the transport sector as well as enhance the financial mobilisation for implementation. In particular, MPI oriented to promote environmentally friendly vehicles, including electric vehicle, and digitalisation applications in transport management optimisation and traffic infrastructure operation.

Perceiving transport as one of the main emitters of green-house gas (GHG) emission, the government of Viet Nam has highlighted this sector in its long-term strategies, specifically setting new targets on GHG emission reduction for the transport sector in the Green Growth Strategy and the updated NDC 2020. Viet Nam is oriented to promote transport decarbonization in order to aid the Paris Agreement goal of limiting planetary heating to 1.5°C.
